Sports in Trinidad and Tobago

Spectator sport enjoys great popularity. Cricket stands out as one of the most popular local sports.

There are a number of local cricketers on the West Indies Team, including the holder of the highest individual score in test and first class cricket, Brian Charles Lara. The major cricket ground is the Queen‘s Park Oval in Port of Spain where club, first class and test matches are played. Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre is also another popular venue.

Football and Athletics take place at various venues particularly at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the Arima Velodrome and at Guaracara park. Several local footballers have gained professional contracts in England and Europe.

Golf: The 18 hole Golf courses at Moka, Maraval, Pointe-a-Pierre and Mt Irvine in Tobago are of international standard and local and regional tournaments are played at these venues.

The Jean Pierre Complex provides facilities for basketball, netball and other indoor sports. Tennis facilities are provided in many districts in Trinidad and Tobago. Since June 1992, horse racing has been centralized at the Arima Racing Complex. Water sports take place mainly in Chaguaramas and Tobago; these include boating, game fishing, surfing, yachting and kayaking. Power Boat racing from Trinidad to Tobago - the Great Race - has been held every year since August 1st, 1969, and includes participants from USA and Venezuela.

Other sporting activities include Hockey, Swimming, Squash, Volleyball, Cycling, Rugby, Badminton, Gymnastics, Rifle Shooting, Boxing, Body Building, Chess, Draughts, Billiards and Snooker. National organisations control most of these sports but there are also minor leagues which cater for the sporting public at the village level. Recognising that sport is a major area for the expression of human talent and an excellent avenue for the development of our youth, the Government acts as a facilitator in the development of sport through the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.
